Jul 14, 2007 · If the trans is of the synchronized style (where the gears are cut in a helical pattern vice non-sync trans with spur cut gears) then it can be done. I have done it before, but only on my truck's T18 because I knew it could take the abuse, it being a stronger and heavier duty trans than what is in any passenger car. The Spicer/Dana 18 was used on the first CJs and their military counterparts until 1971. It was also used on all other trucks until around 1965. From 1941-71 front & rear output shafts on lower end of case were used. 1941-68 have a dual shift lever, while 1968-71 V6 models have a single shift lever. All gears are stamped with 18-8-XX.
My 76 has the out and up shift (T18) and has the low first gear, 6.32. Around 1980 or so, they went to T18A with 4.02 first gear. Second gear in T18 is 3.09, and third is 1.69. Second gear in T18A is 1.97, and third is 1.41.
Chevy Clutch Housings. Most people define Chevrolet Bellhousings by the Clutch size (i.e. 10.5",11", or 12"). Flywheel Diameter (12.75" or 14") or number of teeth is more accurate because some 168 tooth flywheels are drilled with multiple bolt patterns, and the aftermarket makes a 153 tooth flywheel that a 11" clutch and pressure plate will fit.
